THROBBING PURPLE MONSTER!
It was always going to take a special car to make it on to the cover of the first issue of Max Power - and Simon Merritt`s turbo-charged, Dimma-kitted 205 was nothing if not special. Not only was its very purpleness enough to prompt permanent shade-wearing, but Simon also turned up to the photoshoot in matching purple Dimma jacket and baseball cap. People did that in those days.

But building this mad machine wasn`t easy. Dimma stripped Simon`s Pug right down to a bare shell to fit the wide-arch kit, and took a full six-weeks of solid work to complete it. Maybe it would have taken a little less time had Simon been able to decide on a colour - it took a glance down at a favourite tracksuit to make him decide on purple. He sent the tracksuit to Dimma, and the rest is history (and a PPG Special Effect paint).

Dimma were also responsible for the wheels, which look sort of familiar: those talented blokes produced a set of split-rims that would be wide enough to fill the massive arches, using centres from the original 205GTi 1.9 wheels as a supremely clever touch.

Even before the Dimma-isation, Simon had treated the 1.9-litre engine to a Longman cylinder head but it just wasn`t quick enough. Would the solution be a 16-valve conversion or a turbo? The turbo won - and off went the engine to Turbo Technics, to come back with 210bhp at the flywheel. That sort of power in a small front-wheel drive car made for an insane drive.

Lowered, uprated suspension kept the beast in trim - and speaking of trim, the interior got kitted out in leather, with purple carpets and a thumping ICE install. Impressed? We still are.

SILVER BULLET!
My mate Dave Vos quickly found that nothing’s ever straightforward so in a way it is amazing this car ever got finished. Thank goodness it did though, ’cos it’s one of the best Astras we’ve seen in a long time – and it just goes to show that the Euro Max scene is alive and kicking.
Like we said things are rarely straightforward, like when David tried to install a turbo and intercooler. He quickly found that he didn’t have enough space for the radiator which meant he had to use a smaller Corsa rad. Because of this overheating became a problem so he had to use a flatter fan that he can switch on from the inside! Worth it though!!

THE OWNER:

Dave is 28 and works at ARC – a chain of ICE stores in Belgium – as a salesman and installer. Soon after starting, he found that sounds were vital to a Maxxed car, but he also realised that it should look great. Dave grafted on a one-off grille and bumper, along with Calibra sideskirts but we reckon the vents in the front wings are the best mod. He then realised that he had a car that looked the bollocks, sounded great but didn’t go particularly fast. That quickly changed with the addition of a turbo and intercooler.
